a broken beer bottle, paint splashed across the california bank and trust branch, windows broken a lot of them now boarded up. i counted 12 of these large glass windows with some damage. the same thing with businesses across the street. this all happened yesterday. these protestors trashed several blocks in downtown oakland but it all started as an antiwar rally. protestors marking the 11th anniversary of the start of the war in afghanistan. a group of about 200 left from frank ogawa plaza for a march around 7:00 but by 8:15 they had dispersed and went on a vandalism spree. city hall was damaged, protestors smashing the windows. they damaged a half dozen other businesses including the "oakland tribune" offices, three banks, a kaiser permanente and a.c. transit office and the oakland scientific facility. you're seeing damage on the corner and they covered about three blocks in the downtown area. despite the damage there have been no arrests. in observations, elissa harrington, cbs 5. >>> police arresting 20 people in san francisco during a protest over the weekend. people in black alleg
sick including two right here in california. >>> in healthwatch, the hpv vaccine is generally safe and has only minor side effects. that's all according to a new kaiser permanente study. researchers say the vaccine appears to be associated with fainting the day of the shot and skin infections two weeks after. vaccine protects against the human papilloma virus, a common sexual infection that can cause cervical cancer. >>> a virus may stop an aggressive form of breast cancer. doctors at stanford added a tumor fighting protein to a harmless virus and gave it to mice with triple negative breast cancer. they found the virus was actually able to infect cancer cells and deliver the protein- killing tumors. about one in five breast cancer cases here in the united states are triple negative. researchers are now planning to test it on people. >>> it's 4:52. another snafu for the iphone 5. were this one could cause customers money. >> gold and gems stolen from a northern california museum. how the heist was pulled off with workers right there. >> what one woman did when she came face to face
california but as it wraps around some of that moisture moves back into the bay area but i think the focus again will shift further south throughout the day and looks like parts of the south bay could see some thunderstorms so watch out for that. temperatures mainly in the 50s outside. by the afternoon it's going to stay cool. 60s and low 70s. there's a warmup on the way. we'll talk more about that in a moment. right now let's check out the roads with elizabeth. >> just your overnight roadwork so nothing major outside right now. here's a live look at the bay bridge toll plaza. there is roadwork on the upper deck. should be wrapping up here in the next 20 minutes or so but right by the cantilever section, again heading into san francisco, one lan blocked. eastbound 92 san mateo bridge towards hayward sounds like a couple of lanes blocked until 6:00 this morning. that's when caltrans says they will be out there. in the commute direction westbound 92 still looks good leaving the east bay. to our maps, here's a live look at 880 in oakland. maybe you can see some flashing lights there. there ar
out of town heading to southern california but still getting some of that wraparound moisture working into the bay area. this will be the last day of it and then it moves out. looks like high pressure will move into the bay area so the temperature will be warming up. right now 50s across the board. by the afternoon still a cool day today highs mainly just in the 60s. but over the weekend maybe some 70s and 80s. maybe next week some 90s. we'll talk more about that in a moment. right now let's check the roads with elizabeth. >> it may be slick in spots coming into san francisco this morning the pavement was wet from last night an overnight rain so watch out for that. otherwise, the bay bridge is moving fine "friday light" traffic so far on the upper deck. you may find some rolling closures and delays. they are street sweeping in the area but looks good now, no delay approaching the pay gates. elsewhere, to our maps and more roadwork this time in the southbound lanes of 101 on the span of the golden gate bridge. maybe we noticed it might be a little wet on the pavement there heading into

members of the california air national guard based at moffett field have been deployed to the storm area. the 129th rescue wing brought two rescue helicopters and two refueling planes to north carolina. from there, planes and personnel will be sent to wherever they are needed anywhere from north carolina to new england. >>> there are warnings as far west as chicago. cbs 5 reporter cate caugiran joins us with a look at some of the damage and rescue operations. cate. >> reporter: michelle, frank, as this storm continues to move, sandy is destroying things in her path and causing more evacuations along the way. off north carolina this was the dramatic rescue of the hms bounty built in 1960 as a replica of the original 1787 vessel. it was used in a number of films. the bounty sank when her engine filed. her crew was plucked from the ocean. questions are being raised as to why the ship was out to sea at all. >> last week they said a storm was coming and how big it was and you would have thought they would get out of that area. >> reporter: there were six crewmembers on board, 14 rescued. one
